"Ragtime" from L'histoire du soldat
Not long after The Rite of Spring, Stravinsky turned toward smaller works and pared-down ensembles. This was all part of the neoclassical movement, and his Histoire stands at the beginning of that tradition. This excerpt also demonstrates Europe's fascination with African-American music and jazz. While certainly not a rag, the piece brings to mind something of the style.

Symphony in C, first movement
This piece, classical in its structure and orchestration, is a fine example of Stravinsky's neoclassical style. In it, classical gestures take on new life when filtered through Stravinsky's harmonic lens. In this excerpt you will hear harmonies and voicings that seem to come straight from Beethoven as Stravinsky works out details of the movement's main thematic idea.
