The Cascades
Rags were usually in a fairly quick tempo with clear sections based on contrasting ideas. "The Cascades", like his most famous "Maple Leaf Rag", is a good example of this style. In this excerpt you can hear the repeated first section and the beginning of the contrasting second section.

Solace
Not all of Joplin's pieces were true rags. Some were waltzes, some were two-steps and some were marches (one is labeled an Afro-American Intermezzo, recalling Liszt and Chopin). "Solace" is subtitled "A Mexican Serenade", and in the background you can hear the common Latin-American rhythmic pattern of one-two-and-three-four familiar from the habañera and tango.
