The Cascades Rags were usually in a fairly quick tempo with clear sections based on contrasting ideas. "The Cascades", like his most famous "Maple Leaf Rag", is a good example of this style. In this excerpt you can hear the repeated first section and the beginning of the contrasting second section. Real Audio: 28k | 56k |

Solace Not all of Joplin's pieces were true rags. Some were waltzes, some were two-steps and some were marches (one is labeled an Afro-American Intermezzo, recalling Liszt and Chopin). "Solace" is subtitled "A Mexican Serenade", and in the background you can hear the common Latin-American rhythmic pattern of one-two-and-three-four familiar from the habañera and tango.
