Dies irae
In one of his non-operatic (yet no less dramatic) works, Verdi's Requiem -- written for the great Italian writer and patriot Alessandro Mazzoni -- we can hear Verdi using the chorus and soloists to their full dramatic power. The "Dies irae" ("Day of Wrath") depicts the day of final judgment.
