Water Music, Suite in D major, Allegro
The loud and boisterous quality of this piece betrays its function. It was music to be played outdoors (in this case, to accompany the king as he floated down the Thames). Handel was a master at this kind of spectacular, exciting music, and the story is told that the king demanded it to be played no fewer than three times on that day.
