Liszt: Totentanz (Danse Macabre)

Audio example

Totentanz (Danse macabre)
This virtuoso work for piano and orchestra is a set of variations on the Dies irae chant from the Requiem Mass. Death and the macabre held a special fascination for the Romantic composers, and Liszt used the theme as the basis for a set of truly diabolical variations. As the piano and the orchestra set out the theme, you can get a sense of the fireworks to come.
