Mendelssohn: Symphony No.4 "Italian"

Audio example

IV. Saltarello: Presto
The melodies for this symphony were, in part, inspired by Mendelssohn's travels in Italy. The rhythm of this movement reflects that of an energetic Italian dance, the tarantella. Tradition held that such a dance was the only way to ward off the effects of a poisonous spider's bite.
