Dvorák: Symphony No.9 "From the New World"

Audio example

Symphony No.9 in E minor "From the New World", second movement
Although Dvorák based this movement on Longfellow's "Hiawatha", the melody played by the English horn has become associated with the Negro spiritual, since it soon came to be sung as a sort of spiritual, "Goin' Home". This melody, as well as the striking series of opening chords, returns in the final movement, giving the piece a cyclic quality.
