Ellington: Cotton Tail |

Cotton Tail A great number of Ellington's tunes have become standards for jazz bands. They are wonderful pieces in and of themselves and great starting points for other musicians. Here is Claude Bolling's version of one of Ellington's favorites. In the first excerpt you can hear Ellington's melody, leading into a series of solos. In the second, the singer improvises nonsense syllables (scat) and then "trades fours" (four-measure solos) with the sax player. Real Audio, Excerpt 1: 28k | 56k Real Audio, Excerpt 2: 28k | 56k |
