Messiaen: Turangalîla Symphonie, VI: "Jardin du sommiel d'amour" In a more lyrical passage, the ondes martenot plays the melody (doubled by the violins). In the background, the piano plays a part that Messiaen marks with the words "like a birdsong." Real Audio: 28k | 56k |

Lutoslawski: Symphony No.3 In this excerpt, Lutoslawski mixes strict notation and what he called "aleatoric counterpoint." The section begins in strict time, with a group of four eighth notes that begin and end the entire work. This section is followed by a clarinet solo accompanied by free counterpoint in the woodwinds and interjections by the piano. At the end it returns to a more clearly metric section.
